Dear Gardening
Friends,
This year we are mailing a
2007-2009 three year catalog. In January of 2008, you will receive a
supplement to this 2007-2009 catalog if you are a current customer. This
supplement will only show new introductions and changes to the 2007-2009
catalog. IT IS IMPORTANT TO SAVE THIS CATALOG FOR FUTURE REFERENCE.
Because the market prices are stabilizing, the expense of printing a new
catelog every year is unnecessary. By keeping the costs down, we can
continue to provide our WEB page with all current prices and pictures of
new introductions. The convenience of a website allows anyone with a
public library to have access to the net. We do have pictures of current
and past introductions on our WEB PAGE (www.schmidgardens.com). Also on the webpage will be
pictures of our nursery and selected trees and shrubs available AT THE NURSERY LOCATION ONLY.
In this catelog, we will be featuring two long awaited new hosta introductions; Clarence Owens GREENDRAGONET, giant in size and stately in appearance. Many feel it is one of the most beautiful green hostas, they have ever seen. Our second introduction is John Kulpa's White Undies, a large blue green with snow white back.
Many collectors have been waiting for this plant for it's breeding potential for new white backed hosta. All divisions will be sold off the original plant which is field grown not tissue culture.
.
Plant Sizes
In 2001, we began to offer plants in Regular
and Jumbo sizes. This was because pricing in the Hosta market has become
so confusing. Most Nurseries offer Tissue Culture plants only 1-2 years
old. Since we grow our plants many more years, 5-10, we are offering
regular or jumbo plants. Most plants are available in smaller sizes at a
reduced price, even if not listed that way in the catalog. Anyone can
produce a lower-price by providing less of a plant. Our plants are
divisions off of large mature field-grown plants, 5-10 years old. The
number of divisions of plants do not tell accurately how big or old a
plant is. Don't be misled! Only age and size of plant tell age of
plant produced. Avoid over-fertilized plants, the are weak and usually
shrink in size the next year. Our plants are not fertilized, but are field
grown in good soil and acclimate better and quicker when planted in your
garden.
Thank You
We want to say Thank You to all our
wonderful people who help us in so many ways in the nursery: Ted,
Marilyn, Rosalie, Katie and Sean. Without the efforts of our talented crew, our
nursery would not be what it is today! Our many thanks.
Important
It is not
necessary to make an appointment to visit the nursury however if you would like my attention it is
extremely important to make an appointment when visting the nursery.
Weekends book first, so call ahead as soon as possible. We understand that
things come up unexpectedly, so please call and leave a message and let us
know if you are going to be late or have to cancel. That way we don't
wonder if you are just late for the appointment or not coming at
all.
Customer Satisfaction
We will continue to send a single division or
better, field-grown hosta and double division of daylilies except on newer
varieties. We want our customers to be happy with their plants. In an
effort to ensure customer satisfaction, we would like to offer the
following helpful cultural suggestions: If you have ever had problems with
crown rot, it is caused by environmental conditions, beyond the seller's
control. Since we rarely lose any plants, we thought you might like to
know what we do to our plants. All expensive plants are dipped in a
solution of water and Benlate according to label instructions; other
fungicides work too. We have never lost any plants treated this way. Water
around the crown once a week with a solution of Benlate or with another
systemic, for a couple of weeks. In order to grow healthy plants, much
depends on what YOU do when you receive them at your home. We are not
responsible for losses caused after safe delivery to you. All prices are
subject to change without notice.
Variegated Plants
Now the issue of variegated plants. Many want
unstable variegated plants to breed with. We will continue to provide
these but with this word of caution: Variegated and unstable plants are
not for everyone. One can grow these successfully by knowing a few facts.
First of all, not all plants from and unstable variety look exactly the same. You
need to be patient and divide plants when unwanted plants appear. Dividing
is the key to getting outstanding plants. Some plants are extremely
unstable, such as Flamboyant, others are much easier and do not tend to
revert so easily. We discourage purchasing plants like Flamboyant. We try
to note plants that we feel could be disappointing, labeling then very
unstable. We will ship streaked plants, but we do not guarantee what
will happen after you receive them. This depends on you and the nature of
the plant.
Payment
The last area has to do with payment of plant
orders. All of our customers are equally important; we must stick to one
way of doing business. Orders are received on a first-come basis with
payment in full. Your plants are reserved at the time we received payment
either by check or credit card payment. Your credit card will be billed
the day we receive your order, not when your order is shipped in the
Spring.
